Manufacturing Technology

Manufacturing technology is about how things get made, from start (research and design) to finish (production and output). It applies problem solving, automation, mechanical skills, and technology to streamline production processes for the things we rely on and use every day: cars, airplanes, computer and transportation systems, electronics, pharmaceuticals, just to name a few.

Manufacturing technology takes new ideas in almost every field and literally builds them. In biotechnology, for example, research and discovery have paved the way for the production of artificial limbs and joints: Manufacturing technology is used not only to make them, but also to create a manufacturing process that produces them with the speed and accuracy companies need to succeed in a competitive market.

Manufacturing technology's applications are everywhere. The result: Accessible high-quality products like sound systems, laptops, DVDs, medicine, robotics, metals, textiles, and fabrics — and the quality control that makes the products we rely on safe to use.

Manufacturing technology goes hand in hand with engineering technology. And because manufacturing technology exists in every industry, careers in this field span everything from building computers and electronic equipment to cars and trucks. Manufacturing jobs attract problem solvers and people with good hands-on, mechanical skills.
