As a biotechnology manufacturing technician, you'll assist in the manufacturing of products that are created by biotechnology companies. These products might include drugs for pharmaceutical companies or food additives for the food industry. You'll work with equipment that ranges from the very large (huge vats of raw materials) to the very small (precision measuring instruments). You'll also be responsible for keeping detailed records of the production process.
You'll work as part of a team that includes manufacturing engineers, scientists, and laboratory technicians and assistants. You might also assist quality-assurance managers and auditors from outside agencies like the FDA (Federal Drug Administration). You might work in a manufacturing plant, a laboratory, or a testing facility.
Tasks may include:
- Collecting, weighing, and measuring materials needed for production
- Operating, maintaining, and performing routine repairs on laboratory equipment
- Testing finished products for compliance with federal regulations
- Maintaining detailed records to keep the company in line with federal regulations
- Coordinating quality-control process for testing of raw materials, methods, and products
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in biotechnology or related science field
Skills Required:
- Strong math skills, at least through algebra
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals
- Good problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities
- Physical strength and stamina
