As a precision agriculture technician, you'll use GIS and GPS mapping technology in many different phases of the agribusiness industry. Agribusiness deals with the production operations of a farm, from the manufacturing of equipment to the distribution of crops. You'll use computer maps to gather data on soil, crops, pests, and weather that will determine a farm's specific agribusiness needs.
You'll work closely with farmers on agricultural cooperatives (organized groups of farms) and individual family farms. You'll demonstrate to them site-specific techniques that will increase crop production and improve or update business management. You'll also advise them on environmentally sound farming practices. You might work for agribusiness consultants, farm chemical vendors, or farm associations.
Tasks may include:
- Creating and analyzing maps related to crop yield, drainage systems, and other precision agriculture data
- Pest scouting and adjusting or operating pest-control equipment
- Operating various pieces of farm equipment
- Aiding in the decision-making process surrounding new farming and business techniques
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree or certificate in agricultural technology or related field
Skills Required:
- Knowledge of basic concepts of precision agriculture, plant function, and pest control
- Ability to read maps
- Good analytical skills
