Data Manager

As a GIS data manager, you'll be responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of geographic data. You'll oversee database design and maintenance and make sure that users are getting high-quality data. This data might show patterns of land use or home building in a particular region. Groups that might be interested in such data include town planning boards and environmental agencies.

You'll work closely with GIS technicians and analysts, mapmakers, surveyors, and engineers. You might also be in contact with members of the public and with local and state government officials, training them to use GIS. You might attend planning or zoning meetings where your data will help their decision-making process.

Tasks may include:
  • Developing new analysis methods to enhance the uses of GIS data
  • Producing maps and reports based on GIS data
  • Developing and implementing quality control procedures for GIS products and services
  • Communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Providing technical support to members of the public and co-workers

Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in GIS or related field

Skills Required:
  • Solid knowledge of GIS equipment and concepts
  • Computer skills and knowledge
  • Map-reading abilities and an understanding of geography, aerial photography, and map-production principles
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
