As an automation technician, you'll build, install, and maintain automated machinery and equipment. Automated equipment is "smart" and handles tasks, such as shutting off lights or triggering an alarm, through computerized systems. It is designed to reduce energy costs for business and industry and to improve quality of life for individuals.
You'll work with builders, designers, engineers, and customers and clients. Today, automation technicians do important work in every industry. In the home-building industry, for example, you might install computer systems that automate home theaters or security systems. In the medical industry, you might produce and maintain automated conveyer systems or room-temperature regulators in hospitals.
Tasks may include:
- Following blueprints or engineering specifications for installation and repair
- Detecting errors in equipment based on its mechanical, electrical, hydraulic (water-powered), and pneumatic (air- or gas-powered) qualities
- Coordinating on-site installation by examining building layout and anticipating difficulties and challenges
- Providing training and technical support to customers
- Planning work processes
- Preparing technical documentation and instruction materials
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in manufacturing technology or equivalent certification
Skills Required:
- Computer, electrical, electronic, and mechanical skills
- Manual dexterity and attention to detail
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Experience working with computers
