As an industrial designer, you’ll create designs for commercial, medical, and industrial products and appliances. These products cover a wide range of manufactured goods, from toys to machinery. You may also revise existing product designs to create better, more efficient models.
You’ll work closely with engineers, manufacturers, market researchers, consultants, and product testers. You’ll also spend time in the field observing and researching materials, product use, and production processes.
Tasks may include:
- Discussing manufacturers' and client requirements
- Conducting product design research
- Studying design factors (cost, technology, production, safety, trends, and marketing and business strategies)
- Explaining and illustrating products' internal components
- Creating test models and sample products
- Modifying designs to meet manufacturing or cost requirements
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in manufacturing technology
Skills Required:
- Problem-solving and technical abilities
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes
- Ability to design using 3-D computer applications
