As a Web developer, you'll be responsible for making a Web site work. Every part of a Web site, from a page's background color to an interactive chat room, functions as a result of programming code. Using different computer languages, you'll write that code.
You'll work closely with the Web development team: Web producers, other developers, designers and graphic artists, and people in marketing, sales, and sometimes public relations. You might also assist clients or members of the public with online technical support.
Tasks may include:
- Conceiving, building, testing, and maintaining Web pages and links
- Updating content and ensuring that original site function and design aren't disrupted
- Building a site's interactive components, including search engines, shopping carts, and chat rooms
- Incorporating video, audio, and animation into Web pages
- Providing documentation for maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting
- Compiling statistics related to utilization of site
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in information technology, Web development, or related technology field
Skills Required:
- Extensive knowledge of HTML and different programming languages, including Perl and C
- Knowledge of graphic arts packages, including Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including some knowledge of grammar and punctuation
- Familiarity with database operation
- Ability to work as part of a team
