As a transportation planner, you'll conduct and analyze studies on different modes of transportation. These different modes include anything from automobiles to public transportation to bicycle riding. You'll look for ways to improve existing facilities, such as highways, and propose and develop plans for improving efficiency.
You'll work closely with private developers and city and county officials. You'll also interact with the public through surveys and by acting as a liaison at town planning meetings.
Tasks may include:
- Coordinating transportation planning issues at local and regional levels
- Developing surveys to identify travel behaviors that may necessitate changes or improvements in transportation systems
- Using computer simulation models to forecaste the effects of new modes of transportation
- Preparing state, local, and federal grant applications
- Promoting alternative modes of transportation, such as ride-sharing
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in transportation technology or related field.
