Civil Engineering Technician

As a civil engineer technician in transportation, you'll help civil engineers plan, design, and construct structures that are safe for both users and the environment. These structures include bridges, highways, tunnels, airports, subway systems, and railways. You might lay out highway curves based on surveying data or develop traffic-signal timing for isolated intersections. You'll also assist on projects involving repair work on failing structures.

You'll work closely with civil engineers, architects, construction managers, and urban planners. You might also work with CADD (computer-aided drafting and design) technicians to prepare maps and building specifications. You'll be able to work for many different types of organizations, including public works departments and federal, state, or local governments.

Tasks may include:
  • Estimating costs and quantities of materials for construction projects
  • Conducting land and highway surveys using technical equipment, including GPS (global positioning systems) and GIS (geographic information systems)
  • Performing tests on steel, asphalt, concrete, and other construction materials
  • Carrying out inspections and quality control of construction materials and methods
  • Setting up and monitoring instruments used to study traffic conditions
  • Assisting in research and development and data collection for analysis in technical reports

Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in civil engineering or related field
