As a transit operations analyst, you'll analyze the operations of a mass transit agency. Mass transit includes trains, buses, and other public transportation. Some of your responsibilities may involve implementing new or revised procedures to improve service. You'll also conduct research to determine whether your transportation system meets the needs of the community it serves, and how technology can be implemented to improve service.
You'll often work with representatives from other transportation agencies, like AMTRAK, and with outside contractors.
Tasks may include:
- Analyzing, preparing, and modifying operations department budget
- Developing cost-reduction programs and recommendations for other improvements
- Observing and analyzing schedules and routes to determine system performance
- Inspecting facilities and equipment
- Monitoring labor relations and supervising other staff
- Conducting research, compiling data, and generating reports for presentation (oral and written)
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in transportation technology or related field
Skills Required:
- Strong analytical skills
- Familiarity with public transportation objectives and procedures
- Knowledge of management and administration, including bookkeeping
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience with personal computers, including programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
