Safety Specialist

As a safety specialist in the construction engineering field, your goal will be to ensure safety in work and structural environments. You'll work to ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials, assist in testing for structual soundness, or inspect equipment.

You may travel frequently for your work to different work sites. You'll consult with construction managers and engineers regarding safety procedures and violations. You may also train workers and supervisors in new safety plans and regulations.

Tasks may include:
  • Inspecting machinery and equipment, such as scaffolding and lifting devices, to ensure their safety
  • Using scientific equipment to test for the presence of potentially toxic materials, such as certain air-gas mixtures
  • Investigating accidents once they've occurred to determine possible causes and preventive measures for the future
  • Preparing written reports from collected data
  • Implementing safety-education and informational programs

Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in construction engineering or related field


Skills Required:
  • Strong knowledge of federal and local safety laws
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Good public-speaking skills
