As a biotechnology laboratory assistant, you'll assist with the setup of scientific experiments. These experiments might focus on anything from the testing of a new drug for the pharmaceutical industry to the production of a synthetic fiber for use in the clothing industry.
You'll work closely with scientists and researchers. You'll keep detailed records of all the data they collect during an experiment, as well as the procedures they use. You might also conduct experiments using scientific equipment to make your own measurements and observations.
Tasks may include:
- Recording, analyzing, and interpreting experiment data, then preparing reports from the data
- Weighing and measuring chemicals and preparing chemical mixtures
- Cleaning and sanitizing work areas and scientific equipment, including glassware and measuring devices
- Maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies
- Limited troubleshooting of instruments used in experiments
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in biotechnology or a biological science
Skills Required:
- Excellent recordkeeping and organizational skills
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Computer experience, especially with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
- Manual dexterity and physical strength and stamina
