As a contractor in construction engineering, you'll be responsible for coordinating the building of home and work spaces from start to finish. You'll oversee the construction of single-family homes, high-rise apartment complexes, schools, airports, and office buildings from the ground up. You might also construct additions or make repairs to existing structures.
Your work on a project begins when architects, civil engineers, and designers complete their detailed plans and blueprints. You'll be in close contact with the client for the duration of the project. You'll supervise a crew of construction workers and special trade contractors, such as plumbers and electricians, to complete the job to client and building-code specifications.
Tasks may include:
- Providing estimates, submitting bids, and drawing up contracts for new jobs
- Securing equipment and construction materials
- Arranging for required site inspections and permits
- Coordinating labor and scheduling
- Running all aspects of business, if self-employed
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in construction engineering technology or related field
