As an electronic engineering technician, you'll assist in the production and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic equipment. You'll inspect all the parts of an electronic system for problems, from its tiniest components to its operation as a whole. Electronic equipment you'll work on might include radar and navigation equipment, broadcast and recording systems, or computer software.
Much of the time you'll work independently, but you'll also assist electronic engineers and technologists. You may supervise craftspeople (contractors) and provide technical support to customers and clients. Electronic engineering technicians may work for many different types of employers, including the government, utilities, or communications companies.
Tasks may include:
- Assembling, installing, and repairing electronic circuitry, components, and systems
- Inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing malfunctioning equipment
- Preparing sketches, graphs, and drawings of electronic systems
- Setting up and performing environmental and operational tests on new equipment or models
- Writing technical reports based on test data
- Instructing customers and clients about how to operate electronic equipment
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in engineering technology, electronic engineering, or related field
Skills Required:
- Strong problem-solving ability, especially in mathematics
- Ability to read and work from diagrams, sketches, and verbal instructions
- Good hand-eye coordination
- Solid interpersonal skills, particularly in customer relations
