As a mechanical engineering technician, you'll help develop and test mechanical equipment found in industrial machinery and consumer products. This equipment may operate anything from a hair dryer to a clothes dryer, a power tool to a power plant. You might troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment, or program CNC (computer numerically controlled) tools, computers, and robots in the components of a machine.
You'll provide technical support to mechanical engineers and technologists in labs and factories. You might work with contractors, such as electricians, and also with customers when installing or repairing machinery. Mechanical engineering technicians work for a range of companies and organizations, including engineering firms, educational institutions, and auto manufacturers.
Tasks may include:
- Assembling, installing, and maintaining new or modified mechanical equipment or components
- Providing quality-control inspections to improve mechanical processes
- Recording test data and ensuring that all mechanical failures are documented
- Calculating operating and building costs
- Preparing technical drawings in the design phase, often using CAD equipment
Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in engineering technology, mechanical engineering or related field
