Engineering Technology Graphics Technician

As an engineering technology graphics technician, you'll use computer-aided drafting (CAD) equipment to create 3-D drawings of every part of a product. Your technical drawings will specify measurements, materials needed, and production procedures. You'll then assemble the product onscreen to make sure the design works. You'll prepare illustrations of a wide range of products, from boats to bathing suits.

You'll work from the rough sketches and calculations made by civil engineers, architects, land surveyors, designers, and scientists. Your drawings in turn will be used by construction workers, computer programmers, even clothing designers, as they make a finished product. An engineering technology graphics technician might also be called a CAD technician or drafter.

Tasks may include:
  • Performing design layout and "mockup" with CAD equipment
  • Reviewing engineering drawings and designs for adherence to established codes and standards
  • Preparing documentation for technical reports and presentations
  • Using traditional (manual) drafting equipment, including rulers and protractors, when called upon to do so

Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in engineering technology, CAD, or related field
CAD certification sometimes required

Skills Required:
  • Excellent computer knowledge and skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Familiarity with practices and procedures in field of employment
  • Ability to work as part of a team and follow directions
