As a marine electronics technician, you’ll evaluate, test, and repair the systems and equipment used on ships. At sea, you’ll maintain computer networks, repair electronic oceanographic equipment, and install new equipment to meet research needs.
You’ll work with a team of marine scientists on board a ship. In the event of an instrument failure, your job will be to determine the problem and fix it. Ocean travel is often required.
Tasks may include:
- Inspecting equipment
- Ordering new equipment and parts
- Trouble-shooting equipment failure
- Identifying mechanical and electronic problems
- Repairing systems and equipment
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in marine technology or related field
Skills Required:
- Mechanical and electronic aptitude
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Problem-solving skills in pressured environments
- Solid understanding of marine technology equipment
