As a civil engineering technician in the construction industry, you'll help engineers plan, design, position, and construct buildings or other structures. These structures might include water-treatment plants, oil and gas pipelines, dams, and power plants. You might also conduct studies on existing structures that have been damaged by earthquakes and other natural forces.
You'll work closely with civil engineers, architects, construction managers, and urban planners. You might also work with CADD (computer-aided drafting and design) technicians to prepare maps and building specifications. You'll be able to work for many different types of organizations, including public works departments, utility companies, and federal, state, or local governments.
Tasks may include:
- Estimating costs and quantities of materials for construction projects
- Performing tests on soil, concrete, and other materials to determine suitability for construction purposes
- Carrying out inspections and quality control of construction materials and methods
- Generating and presenting technical reports to people with different levels of knowledge
- Preparing contract documents, drawings, and maps
Degree Requirements:
Minimum two-year degree in construction engineering technology or related field
