GIS Analyst

As a GIS analyst in agricultural technology, you'll conduct geographic research and analyze maps and data using sophisticated computer equipment called geographic information systems, or GIS. The GIS captures and stores spatial data about locations on the Earth's surface. You might use this system to analyze data about a community's use of its natural resources or about the impact of global warming and soil erosion on the land.

You'll work on projects with cartographers (mapmakers), land surveyors, and GIS technicians, and you might work in a variety of settings: agricultural, construction, or real-estate development.

Tasks may include:
  • Editing, updating, and analyzing geographic data in GIS
  • Interpreting maps and construction documents
  • Assisting co-workers and outside users with GIS
  • Providing quality control of GIS and data
  • Using computer-aided design (CAD) software

Degree Requirements:
Two-year degree in Geographic Information Systems or related field

Skills Required:
  • Solid knowledge of GIS and other computer systems and programs
  • Analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
