Customize for Your College:

To make a stronger connection to your program and your target audience, replace the three students featured in the PowerPoint presentation with students from your own program. (Be sure to obtain proper permission from the students.) Then customize Slide 7 with math and science courses and support systems that are integral to your technology program. Add your college logo to each slide to customize the entire presentation.

Set Up:

  1. Set up a computer on a desk next to your table so that participants can click through the presentation. Test the presentation to make sure it runs smoothly. If you do not have a computer, print out two copies of each PowerPoint slide, laminate, and set on the table for participants to flip through.

  2. Obtain copies of any of your college's promotional materials that address math and science courses and support systems, such as tutoring, for each participant. Consider distributing course listings and program requirement booklets.

  3. (OPTIONAL) Set up an additional computer to play the Math and Science: Keys to Cool Careers video vignette. Run the video using QuickTime's loop command (under the movie menu item) for continuous play.

Procedure:

  1. Invite participants to click through the Keys to Cool Careers presentation on the computer.

  2. After a participant has gone through the presentation, ask if he or she has any questions. This is your opportunity to talk about what classes and support systems your college offers. Here are some things you may want to talk about:
    • Find out if participants relate to the attitudes towards math and science expressed by any of the students in the PowerPoint.
    • Explain how content learned in math and science courses is applied in your technology programs.
    • For prospective students who are still in high school, discuss the math and science classes they should take before graduating.
    • For prospective students who are out of school, discuss the remedial math and science classes you offer.
    • Talk about the support systems you offer, such as tutoring and math and science centers.

  3. Give each participant copies of your college's promotional materials.
